DECLARE assets. That was a directive to ministers and deputy ministers by Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi following the formation of the new federal government.
It was an obvious order. The people want transparency in the affairs of the government. They want an accountable and responsible administration. More importantly, they want a clean and non-corrupt government.
Now, Transparency International (TI) also quite obviously lauded Abdullah’s move to disclose the assets of his government members. But the public should play its role by reporting government servants to the authorities if they live beyond their means.
The asset declaration should include their spouses and immediate families.
I would think such a move should be extended to opposition states and MPs as well.
TI also threw down the gauntlet to state governments run by the opposition to do the same. An ombudsman should be appointed to see to it that such a mechanism of checking abuse of power is in place.
